Traveling Day

There were only a few hiccups yesterday with our travel. And we made it to our hotel. We had enough food left over from our breakfast that we had lunch and dinner.

My night’s sleep was disturbed by strange dreams and restlessness. So maybe sleep on the plane? Doubtful but maybe.

Well we are off to a great start this morning. I had my Apple Watch on the charger and when Noël was putting cables together it must have fallen off. My Apple Watch was left at the hotel. We rode the shuttle to the airport and back. While on the way back Noël called the hotel and they had someone look for it so when we got back they had it waiting for us. And they didn’t make us pay for the shuttle again. And we were only 30 minutes later than originally planned.

When we were checking our bags my passport was rejected not once, twice, three times but four. The very patient klm worker got it to work. Whew.

A little rest and relaxation in the klm lounge was a nice treat. Our flight was delayed by 30 minutes, which meant that we were not in a hurry to get to the gate. But as we arrived at the gate for the start of boarding time the display read, “Gate Closing”.

Long flight but we made it. More to come.

And so it is…

Wow where has the year gone? Oh yeah, packing, planning, traveling and going into early retirement!!

As many of you know we start out 2 January from Terneuzen to hike 2500kms/1500 miles. We are headed to Santiago de Compostela and then on to Finisterra and Muxia. We invite you to follow our journey here and also in Polarsteps app. We are also opening a Gofundme in order to raise awareness to cancer research. Stay tuned.

Today was momentous because we handed over the keys to the house. It’s final we are nomads. We feel so fortunate to get to be able to go on this journey. And want to thank our families and friends for their support, love, encouragement and even questions about our sanity.

After handing over the keys we had a quick coffee with Lindsay before catching a bus and a train to Amsterdam. Tomorrow we head to Texas for some family time.

Stay tuned to the adventures!!

Last big hiking day

After another wonderful breakfast on the rooftop we decided to try again to find the lighthouse.

We figured out if we hadn’t gone up the mountain we would have found it pretty easily. It wasn’t super easy to get to, well the last 1.3 kms weren’t. It was a narrow path up and down with steep drops straight onto rocks or the sea. Being the clumsy person that I am I worked very hard to keep my footing. Thankfully I did.

The lighthouse is operated by solar panels today and has not been occupied since 1950s. It was built in 1870 and is said to be the prettiest lighthouse in Greece. We found it to be anticlimactic. But still enjoyed our walk. And the beautiful scenery. On our way to the lighthouse we walked through Russian Bay. There used to be a Russian fort here it is no longer occupied.

On our return we showered and decided to have dinner in the afternoon. We tried another place for moussaka and were once again disappointed. It was cold and not really tasty. We decided that we will fix it at home. But the meatballs and tzatziki was delicious.

We also did a little more shopping. Now we have to practice packing and probably buy an extra bag. 😂

Poseidon’s Sanctuary

After another delicious breakfast we strolled down to the shop to buy water but it was closed because of a national holiday. 27 October is Oxi day in Greece. Oxi means no in Greek and it is the day the the Prime Minister of Greece said “No” to Mussolini. Fortunately cafes were open so we were able to buy water for our hike.

We started out from our hotel and took the same route as we took to go to the monastery but this time took the path to Poseidon’s Sanctuary. we tried to follow a route on AllTrails but the route seemed to have changed. The road up the mountain had been recently paved so was nice and smooth.

As we started we walked along the coast and by the time we got to Poseidon’s Sanctuary we were on the other side of the island looking down at the coast. The sites were amazing.

Poseidon’s Sanctuary was interesting but really in ruins. The building in this site started in the Late Bronze Age then Early Iron, Archaic, Classicaal, Late Classical-Early Hellenistic, Hellenistic and finally Roman. It was quite big.

The journey down the mountain seemed steeper than the journey up. And when we finally got down we had made a full circle.

We went for an early dinner. Have i said Greece has a lot of cars? Well this one was very persistent and even tried to get in my lap. After dinner we walked back to our hotel and were sound asleep by 9 pm.
